OUR MISSION STATEMENT
By the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit, Second Chance Global Ministries will meet the needs of people through Jesus Christ, by providing individuals a way to become complete through worship, ministry, evangelism, fellowship, and discipleship.
Our Mission Statement defines our purpose for existence and is Trinitarian. I will use some of the ideas from Rick Warren’s book, (Purpose Driven Church) to explain how our Mission Statement works.
WORSHIP (Love the Lord with all your heart)
One of the most important reason we exist is to express our love for God for worshipping and servicing him (Matt. 4:10) The Scripture teaches us to celebrate God’s presence by magnifying and servicing him (Matt. 4:10) The Scripture also teaches us to celebrate God’s presence by magnifying and exalting his name. Psalm 34:3 (NASB) “O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together.” It is our desire not to worship out of duty, but out of love for our God.
MINISTRY (Love your neighbor as yourself)
Second Chance Global Ministries exists to discover people needs, hurts and hopes and meet them. People needs include, spiritual, emotional, relational, social or physical. For example, there are countless number of refugees and displaced people all over the world. Some of these problems are caused by political instabilities, civil wars, poverty and disease. Our vision is to work with other non profit organizations by providing financial or personnel resources to solve human problems. Those with whom we will work include the Baptists, Roman Catholic Church and its constituencies, Pentecostals, the Lutherans, the Methodists, the Presbyterians, United Way, YMCA, Salvation Army, etc. Locally, we intend to provide similar programs here in Philadelphia along with our quest to offer tutorial programs in Math, English, and Science so that kids will be proficient in these subjects. Because we are socially and economically liberal, we will devote most of our resources to meeting the needs of people who are poor, disadvantaged, displaced, downtrodden, and forgotten by society and the church. Some of these people are mentally ill or otherwise are psychologically disfranchised by social problems.
EVANGELISM (Go and make disciples)
Evangelism is the method of bringing people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ through the proclamation of the Gospel. Our proclamation will precede our presence and practice. In other words, our presence in our community and practice of the gospel we preach and teach will make a difference in our community and the world at large. Believers are loved, graced and privileged people of God’s eternal family. We are therefore invited to bring people into God’s eternal family. Those who are lost will not arbitrarily come to the Lord; they must be brought; they will not seek, they must be sought; they will knock, the door must be opened unto them.
FELLOWSHIP (Go! Make Disciples! Baptize! Teach!)
Rick Warren clarifies Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19-20. In the New Testament Greek Text, there are three present participle verbs: going, baptizing and teaching. Each of these areas is part of the command to “make disciples.” The last three purposes of the church are inextricably intertwined. You cannot make disciples until you reach them, and when you reach them, you have to teach them. When a person is saved, and baptized, he/she becomes member of the fellowship. Fellowship is one’s identification with the body of Christ. Rick Warren said that Christians are called to belong and not just to believe. When we are saved, we belong to Christ's family and his body. Our baptism is not only a symbol of salvation; it is also a symbol of fellowship which visualizes our incorporation into the body of Christ. As part of God’s family the person is no longer alone because we have to support each other. Paul says, “You are members of God’s very own family.
When new believers are baptized, we welcome them into the fellowship of the family of God. We are not alone. We have each other for support. I love the way Ephesians 2:19 is phrased in the Living Bible: “You are members of God’s very own family…and you belong in God’s household like every other Christian.” The church exists to provide fellowship for other believers.
DISCIPLESHIP (Teaching them to obey)
Teaching is discipleship. This word is what we commonly use to refer to the fifth purpose of the church. The church exists to edify, or educate God’s people. Discipleship is the process of helping individuals to become more like Christ in their thoughts, feelings, and actions. This process begins when a person is born again and continues throughout the rest of his/her life. Colossians 1:28 (NCV) says “We continue to preach Christ to each person, using all wisdom to warm and to teach everyone, in order to bring each one into God’s presence as a mature person in Christ.” (Italics added).
As a ministry or church we are not only to reach people, but also to teach them. After someone has made a decision for Christ, he or she must be discipled. We believe that our ministry has the responsibility to develop people to spiritual maturity. This is God’s will for every believer. Paul writes “…so that the body of Christ may built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Eph. 4:12b – 13)
